Finding Solutions: Embracing Distraction and Perspective Change

Updated: 7 days ago

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a cycle of worry when faced with a problem? It’s a common experience. The natural impulse is often to focus entirely on finding a solution. We don’t sleep, we constantly discuss the situation, and we exhaust ourselves physically and mentally until we can no longer continue. However, this approach is often the most ineffective way to handle our concerns. Many studies have been conducted on how our brain functions in these scenarios, and I’ve witnessed it daily with my clients and in my own experiences.

The Power of Perspective

One of my clients, a mid-level manager at a tech company, faced overwhelming challenges as her team struggled to meet project deadlines due to poor collaboration. Feeling stressed and questioning her leadership, she learned the power of distraction and perspective change through our work together.

As a result, she organized a team-building exercise that fostered personal connections and encouraged open dialogue about her team's challenges. This shift in approach led to enhanced communication and innovative solutions, allowing her team to exceed project expectations. Stepping back to redefine problems demonstrates that effective leadership often involves creating a supportive environment where team members feel valued and heard.

Three Tips for Tackling Problems

Here are three tips that can help you when you next have a problem or worry:

  1. Distract Yourself

The best thing you can do when confronted with a challenge is to DISTRACT YOURSELF! Engage in different activities—whether it’s discussing other topics, taking a break, going for a run or a walk, watching a movie, reading, hitting the gym, or even taking a nap. Remember, solutions often emerge when we disconnect from what troubles us. This may feel counterintuitive, but it consistently yields positive results.

  2. Change Your Perspective

What questions are you asking yourself? What are you focusing on? To unlock solutions, one of the most effective strategies is to shift your perspective. This can be achieved by re-evaluating the questions you’re posing to yourself. Ask yourself, "How might I view this challenge differently?"

  3. Talk to Others

Don’t underestimate the power of collaboration! The suggestions from friends, colleagues, or mentors—along with the questions they pose—can help us see things more clearly. Often, we become too overwhelmed to ask ourselves the right questions, so an external perspective can provide the clarity we need. A fresh viewpoint, whether cultivated by ourselves or others, can be transformative.

Embracing Community Support

In moments of uncertainty, remember that you’re not alone. Engaging with a community can provide the support you need. Whether it’s through local gatherings or online platforms, connecting with others who share similar experiences can be incredibly beneficial. You might find that your challenges resonate with someone else, and together, you can explore new solutions.

The Journey of Self-Discovery

As you navigate through your challenges, embrace the journey of self-discovery. Each problem you face is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and your capabilities. Reflect on your experiences, and don’t shy away from the lessons they bring.
